Diablo 2 and SC (and their expansions) should work just fine out of the box on PC, though patching is recommended. Say what you will about WoW, but Blizz has been awesome about keeping their old games updated and playable. The fact they've kept battle.net running is pretty amazing.

I reinstalled SC and Brood War and it played just fine without patching.

If you don't have the games, the battle chests are dirt cheap. $20 for StarCraft (Original game + expansion) and $30 for the Diablo Battle Chest (Diablo 1, Diablo 2, Diablo 2 expansion). You could probably find them even cheaper if you looked.

My SC battlechest came free with purchase of some Rainbow Six game that wasn't even that new itself.

The good news:

The install fixer worked for Starcraft.

The Bad News:

The installer will not let me install Brood War because I don't have a CD-key. Apparently my copies are so old that there was no need for a CD-key to begin with. I have the original case and everything. In other news, I can't find any of my Diablo 2 install or play CD's. Which is kind of infuriating because I've actually purchased them multiple times already and don't relish the idea of heading to Gamestop for yet another Battle Chest. They still seem like they're expensive. I also found my copies of WC3, and Frozen Throne, but can't find the original case for Frozen Throne, and thus I am CD-keyless for that too.

You only need the cd key for Starcraft, Brood War never had a cd key.

For Diablo 2/WC3 you could always download it. You just won't be able to get online with it. Otherwise the only option is to contact Blizzard and see if they still do the replacement cd thing. They used to have you send your cds back to them and they'd send you new ones.

'course, that'd only apply to WC3/Frozen Throne in this case. :/

See, I was thinking that it was possible the Brood War CD never had a key, but the way the installer works, is that there's a pop-up that asks for a CD-Key before you can install, and if you enter nothing, you get locked out. You also get locked out if you enter the key from the regular Starcraft. It's really a problem with their fix. The bastards. Where do I get a stolen copy of Diablo 2 that works with a Mac...? Hmm? Come on RYZY! Fix It!

For Brood War, are you using the instructions from http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?articleId=21153&rhtml=true ? There's two installers for both games.

'cause everything I've read has said to use the original SC cd key for it and it works fine. :/
